The moment Schiller finished speaking, the entire hall fell silent.
Officer Angela was the first to step out from behind the semicircular table. She walked up to Schiller, looked him in the eyes, and said, "Professor, although this is not a public hearing for the media and the general public, every word you say will be entered into the record. You must bear legal responsibility for it!"
"Of course I understand." Schiller looked into her eyes and said, "I understand what I'm saying better than all of you. What you need to do now is put handcuffs on me, then go find the body."
"Where is the body?" Angela narrowed her eyes and asked.
"The third floor."
"The exact location."
"That falls within the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents' scope of work." Schiller turned and glanced around before saying, "I killed someone on your turf. Surely you don't expect me to tell you where I put the body too?"
The agent who had previously replaced Jimmy stepped forward. He gave Angela a meaningful look, and she took two reluctant steps back.
The male agent in white adjusted his glasses and looked at Schiller. "Hello. You may call me Davis, Professor Rodriguez. I hope you understand that dereliction of duty and murder are offenses of entirely different severity. You could face forty years or more in a maximum-security prison."
Schiller watched him in silence. Davis nodded, then turned to his subordinates behind him. "Begin the search. Report immediately when you find the body."
Teams of agents soon began filing out of the hall. The clock hanging in the center of the wall at the front ticked steadily, its minute hand advancing notch by notch. As time passed, the expressions of everyone in their seats changed in different ways.
