When Bruce opened his eyes again, Gordon's face was before him. But instead of confused questions or concern, Gordon said with some urgency, "Bruce, Mayor Roy was assassinated this morning. He's badly wounded!"

Bruce snapped awake, but clarity brought with it searing pain and dizziness so intense it nearly suffocated him.

He found that he could not straighten up at all. Gordon hurriedly helped him sit up and said, "Who the hell did you fight last night? You broke three ribs, injured your lung, and lost two molars."

Bruce's brow furrowed deeply, a flash of anger passing through his eyes. But he did not answer. Instead, he asked, "How's Roy?"

"Not good." Gordon looked deeply troubled. He sighed and continued, "He barely survived, but the problem is that a lot of people think Falcone did it. Things are extremely tense now."

Gordon sat on the edge of Bruce's bed and poured him some water. "You know the Falcone family is a Mafia family. Little Falcone has to answer to the family's interests."

"His prestige was never equal to his father's, so in certain matters, he has to be ruthless and see things through in order to establish his authority."
