"I'm going to the base on Mercury right now." Batman's tone had never been so resolute. He said, "I know how much you love Pride—his Pride that can reject anything. That's something you can't do. Because you accept all comers, you are Greed."

"Refusal is difficult for you, but not for Pride. You envy him, hate him, yet love him. You complement each other and can never be separated. And I am his friend. I'm very proud too."

"So if you meet my demands, I'll say a few good things about you to Pride. You know he's angry right now, over your unreasonable behavior. You're certainly willing to do this, aren't you?"

Batman had once again used a question to state a certainty. Sitting beside him, Greed felt for the first time that things had slipped beyond his control. He cursed Pride's rash actions ten thousand times in his heart, yet still nodded involuntarily.

Batman had spoken straight to his heart. He hated Pride, but loved Pride too; hated his refusals, but loved them as well.

Greed had never been able to refuse, never knew how to refuse, and never wanted to refuse. Greed was so greedy that he was practically Pride's nightmare. For the sake of his greed, he could tolerate any rudeness or discourtesy, like an addict with no bottom line and no principles.

Sleep in the same bed as Pride? Greed hardly dared imagine it. They were utterly opposite sides, which was why, with Superego and pathology's permission, they could take turns assuming control of the body.

Those two mature and cunning personality traits understood that they would never be able to get along, yet would always be drawn to one another.

Therefore, Greed could not refuse Batman's proposal. How could he be as cruel as Pride?
