The Riddler's methods were still the same old routine: kill someone, leave behind a riddle, and lure Batman into solving it.

Spider-Man had targeted the Riddler because he was currently carrying out another serial murder case, with two victims already dead.

Spider-Man saw the photos left behind at the two crime scenes in Batman's archives, then went to the Gotham Police Department to obtain the victims' appearances, fingerprints, and genetic information.

He personally went to the first victim's home. It was a young man living alone in a middle-class apartment by the Gotham River, twenty-six years old, with no notable characteristics.
