Gotham had been destroyed.

In a realist work, this would have been a horrifying opening. Unfortunately, in the world of superheroes, cities were being destroyed every minute of every second.

Even so, Gotham could still make flowers bloom amid vulgarity—or rather, turn its death wish into an art form. After all, even in a superhero world, there were hardly any cities destroyed because their own citizens had started a massive brawl.

The situation becoming what it was now carried an undeniable hint of cruelty, but Gotham's unusual circumstances made it hard to say the people did not deserve it. At the very least, everyone still here one hundred percent had it coming.

Unlike wars between nations and regions, gangs did not begin by bombing transportation hubs, sabotaging key transit routes, or simply blowing up the roads.

For one thing, gangs rarely possessed that kind of strategic vision. Most of this generation of gangsters were fighting a war like this for the first time. They were not professional military strategists; most took things one step at a time, immersed in taking territory and having territory taken from them, with no time to worry about transportation hubs.

For another, destroying those facilities was meaningless. The enemy was not outside the city, so nobody would be bringing troops in from elsewhere. Most supplies came by sea anyway. Seizing the docks was the real advantage; land transportation was not nearly as important.

Because of that, most outsiders stranded in Gotham and locals afraid of dying had fled overnight by train when the war first began. The only ones left now were complete war lunatics. Even saying "serves them right" to their bombed, mangled corpses could not be called cold-hearted.
