Pamela stood before the gates of Rodriguez Manor.
She hesitated slightly as she raised her hand to press the doorbell. On every previous visit, before she had even gotten out of the car, the young butler had already been waiting at the entrance with a smile.
That was highly unusual, Pamela thought. Professor Schiller seemed to know the whereabouts of everyone who came to visit his manor. When they would appear at his doorstep was no secret, so every arriving guest was greeted at precisely the right moment.
But this time, no one had come to greet Pamela.
Pamela knew she had no standing to blame anyone for being impolite, since she had indeed arrived without warning and had not even called first. Still, she did not think the blame for such rude behavior should rest entirely on her shoulders, because Bruce had asked her to come.
The tycoon had a perfectly good reason for it. Bruce claimed that if Pamela did not come, they would most likely see Miss Talia at the dinner table tomorrow. Pamela had taken it as a joke, the sort of joke that sounded like a ghost story.
After learning the full story of Bruce and Talia's entanglement, Pamela figured Bruce feared that an angry Talia coming to see Schiller would further lower his score. Since Bruce had invested in Pamela's security plant research project, he knew she owed him one, so he had dumped the troublesome task of seeking out Schiller while he was angry onto her.
I must have been out of my mind to give him my number. Pamela complained inwardly. There'll probably be plenty more jobs like this in the future.
