"I hope this will be a secret interrogation, Nick. You know these cunning terrorists always think they have leverage to negotiate, so I'll negotiate with them." Pierce strode through the corridor of the underground detention facility and turned to Nick behind him.

Nick nodded. At the next intersection, he did not continue following Pierce, instead heading off alone in another direction.

Before long, Pierce arrived outside an interrogation room. He nodded to the agent guarding the door, and when he pushed it open, he saw two interrogators solemnly recording something.

Pierce stood behind them and glanced over their notes, finding nothing of value. Then he looked beyond the bars. Schiller sat inside with his expression unchanged, not looking at all like someone who had endured seven days of interrogation.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s interrogation methods were no different from modern interrogation practices. They primarily relied on exhaustion, a tactic that had an extremely pronounced effect on ninety-nine percent of vicious criminals, because anyone could grow tired.

Some people always believed ancient torture was more sophisticated than modern interrogation, that as long as enough physical pain was inflicted, there was nothing that could not be extracted. But in truth, humans were fragile. Torture had too low a ceiling; if one round failed to make someone talk, there was basically nothing more to be done. Modern interrogation methods, however, could uncover almost any secret.
