Batman was the best scientist in the world. That was an indisputable fact, but most people rarely realized it. Most simply regarded him as a vigilante with a few screws loose.
But wasn't that why people said necessity sparked ingenuity?
A few days before Batman returned, many people had realized that the propulsion system keeping Gotham aloft had developed a serious problem.
In any other city, this would have caused citywide panic by now. Gotham was floating in space, after all. If it fell, leaving aside the disaster a city of this size would cause upon impact, everyone inside it would certainly die.
But to Gothamites, they could go without living, but they could not go without something to do. They had only been free for a few days—if they fell back down just like that, wouldn't they lose all face?
For the sake of their precious freedom, they began urgently repairing the system. But the system had been cobbled together in the first place. No amount of optimization could do more than patch its foundations, and those foundations meant that it was neither stable nor efficient.
The members of Arkham Asylum had tried nearly every idea they could think of. Even Robin joined the repair work. But unfortunately, wishful thinking had its limits. Getting them into the air once had already been impressive; staying in the sky for the long term was utterly impossible.
Gotham's top scientists held a meeting and concluded that their fate of falling was unavoidable. Fortunately, they had brought the Joker along. The emperor of Gotham comedy once again brought them good news—when in doubt, find Batman.
Only then did the people of Gotham suddenly realize it. Right! Batman was the greatest scientist in the world! Was there any propulsion problem he could not solve?
