"Schiller was a psychiatric patient, but he had almost cured himself in a special way," Bruce said. "He divided himself into a normal state and a pathological state. Most of the time, his normal state was no different from an ordinary person."
Bale-Batman thought back. He had not encountered Schiller's normal state often, but he could indeed tell that Schiller sometimes seemed more energetic, radiating vitality rather than the oppressive aura that inspired fear. That seemed to be the dividing line between his normal and pathological states.
"But his pathological state still exists, and because of the nature of the illness, it's difficult to cure."
"Schizophrenia?"
"Autism."
Bruce continued, "The high-functioning traits autism gave him granted him unparalleled talent. It was as though he could use a special kind of vision to judge and analyze people's minds."
Bale-Batman frowned. "That doesn't sound like a proper treatment process."
"It wasn't. It was just a madman's hallucination, but his unusual talent gave his hallucinations an accuracy rate of up to eighty percent when it came to reflecting mental states."
"Unbelievable," Bale-Batman remarked.
"I thought so too." Bruce nodded, then continued, "After Schiller acquired a normal state, the pathological state generally didn't appear. Even when it did, it wouldn't stay long—just coming out for some fresh air now and then. That was entirely manageable."
"But there was one exception: when Schiller was in very poor condition. More precisely, if he felt severe pain, then the one controlling his body would inevitably be the pathological state."
"Why?"
"There's no particular reason. Just as most people's minds become a mess when they're in pain, physical suffering makes people lose their reason. No matter how strong human willpower is, it has limits."
"So Schiller loses control because of pain?"
"I told you, he gets seasick."
