Many people thought the United States had no identity system and that a driver's license served as an ID card, but that was really only true for ordinary people at the bottom. Those who had received an elite education placed great importance on their educational records. Degrees, academic achievements, outstanding performance, and letters of recommendation were all included in those files. It could be said that they were passports into high society.

Before applying to have a particular instructor serve as their supervisor, students had to submit their educational records. Only after being selected could they become that instructor's student.
