Dick wasn't entirely sure what would happen if he went to the car now, met another version of himself from a different Spacetime, and woke them up, but he didn't think he had appeared here for no reason.
While he had been in the car, Dick vaguely remembered there being a high-rise nearby, one positioned so that it might have been able to see where their car was. But with so many buildings around, for it to appear here had to be some trick of the dense fog.
Dick chose the safest, most conservative option: staying put. He had no idea whether breaking the window and jumping out now would trigger some new abnormal reaction, so the best thing to do was wait and see.
But after he had stayed where he was for about a minute, he noticed the fog on the office's floor-to-ceiling windows begin to stir, gradually forming patterns.
Dick moved closer and looked carefully. The fog was condensing into eyes, matching the abnormal phenomenon described in earlier reports about the mysterious dense fog: enormous eyes appearing in the sky.
Dick backed away a few steps. He wanted to move aside and see whether the eyes were any different, but the instant he took a step, every eyeball turned to follow him.
Dick jumped backward in fright and slammed into the sofa behind him. The pain in his arm and waist told him this was no hallucination.
Then, in that instant, all the eyes narrowed, becoming cold, malicious smiling eyes. Dick's heart sank further and further.
He decided he should get away from the glass, so he crossed the entire office and stopped by the door. He swore he had not touched it, yet the door opened by itself.
