"Damn it! What the hell is going on?!!"

Gordon's furious roar came from the office. The rookie officers trembled, while the slightly more experienced cops held down their hats and leaned against the walls without saying a word.

"Is this how you handle a case?! Where are the eyewitnesses? The physical evidence? The statements?! You have none of that, so what gives you the right to call them suspects? And what gives you the right to lead officers into their workplace and cause trouble?!"

Gordon, his face livid, flung a document in front of Clay. "Councilman Draven just called me and said one of my men had caused a huge disaster. At first, I didn't believe him. You really gave me one hell of a surprise!"

Clay picked up the document and saw that it was a dismissal notice. The stated reason was that he had committed a serious error while on duty.

He did not actually care. His identity could be changed at any time, and no one could see his real record anyway. What concerned him was something else.

"We found dismembered body parts in the suspects' house, and there were eyewitnesses who personally saw them murder someone. Isn't that sufficient evidence?"

Gordon closed his eyes and sighed, lifting the back of his trench coat. "Evidence isn't for convincing yourself, and it isn't for convincing us cops. It's for convincing the public. It's for convincing the jury."

"Isn't this enough to convince the public? They might not even understand the professional forensic reports issued by the evidence department."

"Then can you explain what all these complaints are about?" Gordon flung another large stack of documents in front of Clay.

Without even looking at them, Clay said, "They're making unreasonable trouble. Our evidence is already more than sufficient."
