When Peter's muffled scream came through the communicator, Schiller sighed. As a Holy Son, Peter was nearly perfect. If he had any flaw, it was that his maximum Sanity Value was a little low, so even when it was full, it could easily be drained away.

Sanity Value was not courage. Peter was not lacking in courage, but he lacked the ability to turn certain mystical oddities into rational thoughts. Give him a wooden stake, and he could beat something to a pulp, but blow a gust of wind at him and he was helpless. Spider-Man was simply not very good at dealing with these ghostly, supernatural enemies.

From Peter's somewhat panicked description, Schiller learned that someone had just moved into Room 1904 across from him—a youth in a jacket who, before entering, had flashed Room 1905 a deranged grin like an evil serial killer.

If that person had rushed over and hammered twice on the door, Peter would definitely have charged out to return the favor. But the man did not move at all. He just stood at the door smiling, frightening Peter badly enough that he now did not even dare open the door.

As expected, it was no use relying on someone like that to explore. Schiller would have to do it himself, but before heading out, he needed to set a goal.
