After being taken out of the car, Wanda had assumed she would be brought into the crematorium. Instead, they led her around the crematorium once, took her back to the rear courtyard, exited through a small back door, and began climbing the mountain.
The group stumbled along the mountain for a long time. By the time they reached the middle of the slope, night had fallen. After going around a dense thicket, they came upon an abandoned air-raid shelter.
God knew how they had found this place. Could this be an air-raid shelter from World War II? Wanda wondered.
During World War II, since no one knew whether the war would reach the American mainland, the United States government had still built protective facilities. It not only encouraged civilians to construct basements, but also built mountain air-raid shelters in some hills. But times changed, and after the war, these protective measures fell into disrepair due to a lack of maintenance. Much of the documentation had been lost, so no one even knew this place existed.
Wanda felt that this air-raid shelter was one such place.
When the shelter's heavy door opened, she was surprised to find no dust inside, nor was it dark. Someone had clearly been using this place for a long time. Wanda was shoved inside, and she vaguely heard some noises.
Footsteps echoed through the empty space, accompanied by faint sounds from some unknown location, sending chills down her spine.
Although there was a bag over her head, Wanda could still see with Scarlet Power. She discovered that this was no mere air-raid shelter. It had later been converted into an operational facility, with corridors and rooms. However, the alterations were far from recent; they looked at least ten years old.
There was even an elevator. Wanda
