The day they set off for Mercury, the sky was cloudless for miles. Thankfully, as the days passed, the unbearably hot summer finally came to an end. After autumn arrived, the temperature dropped slightly. More importantly, the wind had picked up, so it no longer felt quite so scorching.
This should have been Gotham's last sweltering summer. Through the joint efforts of Pamela and the city government staff, enormous numbers of plants had been squeezed into every available space on rooftops, balconies, and the empty grounds around public facilities. Every variety had grown well, solving the Heat Island Effect. Next summer would be much cooler.
Since quite a few people were going to Mercury this time, they were divided between two departure points: Gotham and Metropolis. Schiller, Bruce, and Wonder Woman organized the people leaving from Gotham, while the remaining Justice League members handled Metropolis.
Schiller arrived early in the morning and sat in a coffee shop by the Gotham River. The Flash, Barry, had gone to Schiller's place the night before, and the two of them came over together. Schiller was revising Barry's thesis, and they were discussing its finer details.
After finishing half his coffee, Schiller looked up from his computer and said, "I think it's more or less done. Do one final review within the week, and make absolutely sure there are no errors in the symbols or separator formatting. I'll go say hello to the editor-in-chief..."
