Although she wished she had never grown a mouth in the first place, Jena still tried to clear her throat, took a deep breath, and calmed herself down so she could glean more from the handout before her.

The handout showed that this was another series of three connected murders. The victims had had their genitals removed, their skin peeled off, their bodies stuffed with straw, and then been placed in fields, becoming literal "scarecrows."

This case was not as old as the previous ones from decades ago. It had happened only a few months earlier, but the killer had yet to be caught. In other words, this was another unsolved cold case.

A few seconds later, Jena had sorted out her thoughts. She said, "I think the killer was indeed humiliating them, but not out of instinctive desire. There was a reason for it. He was taking revenge."

Jena looked somewhat at a loss, but she still nodded. Seeing Schiller's displeased expression, she explained, "Grain crops are usually seen as symbols of new life and hope when they are seedlings, and of harvest when mature. But once the abundant fruit has been harvested, the remaining dry straw is no longer as valuable..."

Schiller shook his head. "No. That is not the real reason you reached this conclusion. You are only forcing connections, desperately trying to find logic that sounds plausible."

Jena opened her mouth, but still said, "No, that really is what I think..."
