The black SUV convoy of the IRS Special Investigation Team slowly drove into the underground parking garage of GTO headquarters, the tires rumbling low against the concrete. The headlights carved several harsh beams through the dim underground space, illuminating the mottled stains and rust on the walls.
Bavell Smith was the first to push open her door, the hem of her black trench coat fluttering slightly with her steps. More than a dozen fully armed agents followed behind her, their footsteps perfectly synchronized like a well-trained army.
When the elevator doors opened, Bavell led her people straight toward the core office area of GTO headquarters. The guards at the entrance tried to stop them, but Bavell merely gave one of them a cold glance and flashed her IRS identification. "Special Investigation Team. We're requisitioning your office space. Cooperate, and don't make trouble for yourself."
The guard opened his mouth, but ultimately stepped aside and allowed the uninvited group to storm in.
The employees in the office area stopped what they were doing and looked up at the sudden intruders. Ignoring the surprised and angry stares, Bavell headed straight for the largest conference room. The instant she pushed open the door, Nightwing was standing in the middle of the room with his arms crossed, a trace of chill in the eyes behind his mask.
"Bavell Smith," Nightwing said in a low, calm voice. "The IRS's special commissioner. What a rare guest."
Bavell smiled faintly and walked to the conference table, bracing both hands on its surface as she stared at Nightwing like a blade. "Nightwing, or rather, Richard Grayson. We finally meet."
Nightwing's brow furrowed slightly, but his composure quickly returned. "Looks like the IRS intelligence network reaches farther than I thought. But what exactly are you planning by barging in
