After a conversation with Schiller, Strange came to understand one thing—Schiller's childhood had probably been the equivalent of a Rules Horror story.

A mysterious research facility, heavily armed guards, endless experiments and conspiracies...

The only problem was that Schiller had not been a victim of Rules Horror. He had been the rule itself. The victims were the researchers and guards.

More terrifyingly, his rules were not even fixed. Because his mental state was unstable, he might be one way today and another tomorrow. He could be perfectly fine one second and have an episode the next.

Although this research organization was exceptionally evil and mysterious, it was clearly the sort that pursued worldly profits. That meant most of the people they hired were ordinary people—just ordinary people with low moral standards, willing to lay hands on children.

Human morality had no direct connection to mental state. Having no moral bottom line did not mean someone was insane. They could not understand lunatics, much less Schiller, whom even lunatics could not understand—and this was supposedly the even more difficult Pro Plus Max version of Pathological Schiller.

Anyone who had done scientific research knew that sometimes, even if your expertise was sufficient and your methods rigorous enough, an experiment still might not succeed. Luck was involved. Even the greatest scientists could not guarantee that repeating the exact same experiment multiple times in a short period would produce identical results.

Even inorganic substances whose properties rarely changed were like that, let alone Schiller, a living person. His mental state was fundamentally random, and the scientists' research on him was basically a gacha pull.

And among all the possible mental-state pools, harmless states were the minority. The overwhelming majority were harmful—extremely harmful, the kind where one moment of carelessness could have you sacrificing yourself
