When they were in kindergarten or elementary school, math classes were lively and interesting. Teachers used all kinds of fun examples to explain equations, and they arranged activities and games to help children remember addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division more easily.

Back then, the classroom atmosphere was always cheerful, as if math really were an incredibly interesting subject, one that became more enjoyable the more they learned.

But once they got a little older, teachers began teaching straight from the textbook. The fun activities and games disappeared, and methods for memorizing formulas became pure rote learning.

By high school, math classes were bleak and miserable. Calling them lifeless would have been an insult to Death itself.

Then, in college advanced mathematics classes, the atmosphere seemed cheerful again. But only students unable to get the answer knew they were laughing at how terrible they were. It was a profound display of just how optimistic humans could be in the face of despair.

The main reason for this was that math became harder and harder as people grew up.

It could be taught in such cheerful ways at first because addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division were the most basic foundations of mathematics. Understanding their rules took little effort, so more energy could naturally be spent on other things.

But later, things became increasingly difficult. Merely understanding the basic logic took up most of one's mental capacity. At that point, anything that scattered one's attention might interrupt the thought process, so the purer the environment, the better.

Batman's relationship with the Justice League was like that.

Whenever the Justice League held a meeting, the atmosphere seemed fairly good. Everyone spoke freely, cracked jokes, and bantered.
