"Natasha Romanoff, agent of the CIA Special Investigation Unit." In an office at the Gotham Police Department, Natasha showed James Gordon her credentials. Gordon frowned deeply. "CIA? This isn't within your jurisdiction, is it? Or is this 'Garden of Eden Killer' actually a spy?"

"Even if he is a spy, the CIA has no authority to arrest him. That's the FBI's job. But I'm with the Special Investigation Unit, the only unit with domestic law enforcement authority. You may not have heard of us, but that's fine. We're a secret unit by nature. If Batman hadn't invited me, I wouldn't have come here."

Seeing the look of realization on Gordon's face, Natasha laughed inwardly. A secret unit indeed—one that had been established only half an hour ago. Though Batman in this universe wasn't the president, he clearly had people in Congress and within law enforcement agencies. Fabricating a law enforcement agency out of thin air and preparing sufficient documentation was hardly difficult for him.

"Tell me about the Garden of Eden Killer," Natasha said. "I want to see photographs of every crime scene and the bodies. It would be best if I could interrogate some of the more important witnesses."

Gordon nodded and promptly went to make arrangements. He took Natasha's imperious attitude quite well, because the FBI agents who had come before her had been even worse. They looked down on the Gotham Police Department, had plenty of complaints about Gotham itself, or simply muddled through their work, desperate to slip away at the first opportunity.

Natasha's name was somewhat suspicious, and she was perhaps a little too beautiful, but at least her attitude and methods seemed fairly professional. That already counted as a pleasant surprise.
