"What are you doing?" Natasha asked.
"Getting some air on the roof of Wayne Tower." Schiller's tone remained even. Natasha could indeed hear some wind in the background, enough to tell that he was somewhere high up.
"Even if you couldn't find any clues, isn't this a bit extreme? Want me to call the police for you?"
"That won't be necessary. Have you made any progress over there?"
"It's a complete mess," Natasha said truthfully. "The Garden of Eden Killer, killers controlled by the Garden of Eden Killer, and copycats. Honestly, I'd rather call this city the City of Murder."
"Then you're giving Gotham a little too much credit. There's more here than murder. All right, I really don't have time to chat. Goodbye."
The call was disconnected. Natasha frowned, however, because just before it ended, she had vaguely heard a faint click, like someone adjusting the connection of some equipment. It sounded somewhat familiar.
Natasha thought about it for a long time, then suddenly sat upright. "A sniper rifle?!"
On the roof of Wayne Tower, Schiller removed the goggles he had been adjusting for quite some time, tilted his head again, and brought his eye close to the sniper scope as he searched for his target.
Through the magnified view of the scope, people came and went at the entrance to Wayne Tower. Most were dressed in suits, though every now and then, one or two particularly flamboyant figures passed by: Suit Man beneath a streetlamp, an elegant city woman beside a flower bed, a customer under the awning of a coffee shop...
