When he spread his arms, light descending from the top of the High Tower shone over him, while behind him rose layer upon layer of floors and staircases that seemed to stretch on forever.

They heard Schiller say this, then watched him lower his arms and bow his head. "No matter when, no matter where, those who differ from ordinary people are called patients."

"But when you cannot gain an advantage within a group through ordinary means, becoming the sickest person is the only way to break free from this mediocre, tedious life."

They heard Schiller's tone become increasingly impassioned.
