Peter left the gem and blueprints with Harry. As he worked in the lab, Harry's words kept circling in his mind. Why had the mutants gotten into trouble?

Of course, that wasn't to say they shouldn't have gotten into trouble. More accurately, ever since Marvel's 616 Old Earth had merged with DC's Earth-1, mutants had been the ones getting into trouble most often.

Mutants were the greatest source of instability in Marvel's universe, but Superman and Wonder Woman from this universe didn't indulge them. The X-Men were doing somewhat better, but the Brotherhood of Mutants had truly been chased into a rout by the two of them. Within days, they had been beaten to pieces.

Superman and Magneto had become bitter enemies. Every few days, they fought somewhere in the Solar System. Today, Superman would land an uppercut on Magneto; tomorrow, Magneto would shove Superman into the sun. They were evenly matched.

Though Magneto was powerful, he couldn't cut loose for fear of affecting Earth. Superman, meanwhile, had some vaguely idealistic power on his side, and with Wonder Woman backing him up, he could still keep Magneto suppressed. That had made the Brotherhood of Mutants much more obedient. They hadn't caused any trouble in the past week.

Unexpectedly, the Brotherhood of Mutants was fine, but the X-Men had run into trouble. Peter knew a little about the mutants at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. They shouldn't start fights for no reason, and even if they lost control and had to destroy something, they wouldn't choose densely populated residential or industrial districts. Peter believed Professor X still had that bottom line.

That meant something had definitely gone beyond their control. Destroying only one thermal power plant might have been the best outcome they could manage.
