Agent was currently hiding atop the church rafters. Thanks to the designer's whimsical ideas when the church had been built, the overhead beams had not been concealed but fashioned into antique-style decorations. That made it easy for him to climb up there.
The mummified corpses chasing him were fast and strong, their claws harder and sharper than alloy. One scratch from them would either kill or maim. But they had one small problem: their balance was poor.
These ghosts had been living people before death and only knew how to use human bodies. The dried corpses they were using now had weathered and decayed for who knew how long. Controlling them was certainly different from before, and their weight and joint flexibility were far worse. It was like having to adapt to an entirely new body.
On flat ground, some occult force gave them tremendous explosive power, but they faltered when it came to finer details, such as walking a balance beam. The wood atop these rafters was probably a little wider than an adult's foot, but only a little. Walking on it required exceptional balance; the slightest mistake would send one falling. Agent had been using this method to lead the dried corpses around for several hours.
These dried corpses could jump well and often made it up there, but they could not stay on the beams or catch Agent. The reason Agent had been leading them around was to stall for time.
It was nighttime now, making it truly inconvenient to move around. There were some lights in the church that illuminated the ceiling. He needed to wait there until dawn before acting. Otherwise, if he faced these terrifying monsters in the dark, he would not even know how he died.
