After climbing up from the cellar and following the passage farther in, he found the basement before him, just as expected. This place was even more bizarre.
The walls of the house were covered in bones, all human bones: one wall for adult men, one for adult women, and another specifically for children and infants.
Peter knew full well that the evil spirit could not have killed all of them. There simply could not have been that many people for it to kill. After all, thousands of people vanishing from a single town would have been a little too outrageous. This place might have existed long ago and had merely been discovered by Old Bohr. Perhaps this very room had inspired him to embark on the path of black magic.
After investigating for a while, Peter became even more convinced of his guess, because the objects here were truly ancient beyond belief. Quite a few dated back to the Middle Ages, and some might even have been left behind by ancient tribes.
Here, Peter found a notebook that looked like Old Bohr's experimental notes. He could barely stand reading after flipping through two pages, because this guy had clearly never studied properly and was no serious scholar at all. Rather than research notes, it was more like a diary full of incoherent rambling, with every kind of nonsense written in it. If there had been a university for black magic, he would never have graduated.
The other research manuscripts were even worse. The drawings were not precise in the slightest, and the annotations were completely arbitrary. More absurdly, the guy did not know Latin. Peter could not help asking, "If you don't know Latin, what kind of academic research are you doing?"
Though English was a hodgepodge language, the roots
