"You make a good point," Schiller said. "Based on your temper or the way you do things alone, we really can't be certain you aren't Damian. After all, falling from a high-rise is terrifying. In those few short seconds, someone's personality could be completely shattered, leaving them radically changed by fear.

"Neville provoked you, and you wanted an explanation from your father. It was a little irrational, sure, but considering your age, it wasn't unacceptable."

"Then why?!"

"Because of love."

"What?"

"You don't love Batman." Schiller looked at Damian. "Not just you. Batman won't love anyone who doesn't love him. In other words, he only gives love to those who love him."

Damian looked as though he had been struck over the head. He stood there in a daze for a long while without speaking. Schiller picked up his glass and took a sip of water before saying, "The people Batman loves may have all kinds of flaws. Their flaws may even be greater than anything you've displayed. They might cause trouble, make mistakes, complain, or lose their tempers. But because they have always loved Batman passionately, Batman loves them too and tolerates those flaws.

"On the other hand, someone could be flawless, without the slightest weakness, never making any mistakes, doing everything they possibly could—but if they don't love Batman, Batman won't invest too much energy in them."

"Why?" Damian could not help asking. "Why is it like that?"

"Because Batman knows he doesn't have much love to give." Schiller thought for a moment. "He has too many things to consider and too many things he wants to do. He doesn't have that much time to invest emotionally in others, and because of his personal experiences, he doesn't have that much emotion to invest in the first place. So
