Schiller raised an eyebrow as he watched the footage on the surveillance screen. The Batmen had been right after all. The mastermind behind the disturbance in the Multiverse was indeed connected to the seven Lantern powers: the Black Death Emperor, who had triggered the major event known as The Darkest Night.
When the Black Death Emperor had first been created, he had not actually had much to do with the Lantern Corps. Back then, his status had been higher, and he commanded the "merciless death" of the entire world. Perhaps "decay" was a more fitting description—everything decayed, even the universe itself. Thus, in those days, he had been able to contend with many other powerful beings who served as cosmic backdrops.
But after the backstory had been rewritten, his primary power had become the Black Lantern power outside the colored Lantern power. Though it was still related to death and decay, it no longer possessed such lofty status. His relatively impressive showing had been during The Darkest Night, when he had wiped out Hal's home in one fell swoop. But his later performances had only grown worse, and he was often trampled underfoot.
Even so, this was still an enormous trial for the Multiverse. The Black Death Emperor differed from the other Entities. His power was stronger, his influence broader, and his aggression extreme, leaving no room for conversion. If he had not been unable to escape the Void Domain, he would have brought astonishing disaster to the Multiverse long ago.
This time, he had joined forces with Darkseid, who had merged with the Multiverse, becoming an even more troublesome enemy for the superheroes. If he truly broke through the barrier and descended upon the Real Universe, even the united superheroes would likely struggle to resist him.
