House of X: Rebirth (3)
Quicksilver walked in carrying bags and parcels. After setting the food on the table, he smiled, nodded to them, and said, "Enjoy your meal, gentlemen. If there's any problem, just call me."
"Wait," Schiller called after him. "Aren't you going to introduce the dishes?"
Quicksilver tilted his head, but he stayed. And once the packaging was opened, Schiller understood why Quicksilver had been confused. It was all fast food, and it looked like frozen premade stuff—the kind of frozen fried chicken wings you threw back into the fryer and called a dish.
"Is this all there is?" Schiller asked.
Quicksilver looked a little embarrassed too. He scratched his head and said, "Shipping supplies in from outside isn't very convenient. Frozen food keeps longer. Of course, we know it isn't great to serve guests this, so if you're not in a hurry, I can go to the mainland and buy some for you."
"You don't have fresh meat and vegetables?" Peter asked, a little puzzled.
Quicksilver shook his head and said, "No. We buy everything from outside. The Hellfire Club's cargo ships bring it all to the island together. Krakoa wasn't doing very well before, and not many places were willing to sell us things, so there wasn't much fresh food. It might get better later."
"Can't you grow it yourselves?" Schiller looked up and asked. "I saw a flat stretch of land on the east side of the island earlier. Can't that be used for vegetables?"
Quicksilver seemed stunned by the question, as if the option of growing vegetables himself had never even existed in his mind. He opened his mouth as though he wanted to say something, but even without him saying it, everyone present could more or less imagine why.
