The wind rattled the windows with an eerie sound, and the curtains fluttered in the draft. An unknown light filtered through the glass, casting bright squares across the floor. As Khonshu followed Schiller through the asylum corridor, it was like fingers gliding over black-and-white piano keys.
Khonshu was unlike the other Demon Gods. He could possess Moon Knight in the form of moonlight and accompany them on adventures through human society. Thus, he was not entirely ignorant of human things. At the very least, he recognized this as the corridor of a human hospital.
Yet at the same time, the corridor felt unfamiliar. The twisting alphabetic letters were gone, replaced by square characters that Khonshu found familiar. They resembled the Ancient Egyptian script he had often used before—complex lines, like paintings.
Vaguely, Khonshu recalled seeing this kind of writing in the mind of one of his agents. It came from a distant eastern nation, one as ancient as the ancient Egypt where Khonshu had once dwelled.
As Khonshu walked onward, he turned to inspect the walls of the hospital corridor. Their lower halves were painted blue-green, with white baseboards beneath them. The colored paint was badly chipped, making the place look old and worn.
Khonshu was an ancient Demon God, but he was also the Cosmic Demon closest to humanity. He had gained faith from the people of ancient Egypt, and he had long guarded that ancient land and its people from within its temples.
His way of thinking differed from that of humans, yet precisely because he was so close to them, he understood those tiny lives better.
