On the German-Austrian border not far from the town, a light drizzle still fell. It was not enough to wash away the smell of blood in the air, and that scent reminded Stark of the days when he had been kidnapped in Afghanistan.
On his first day there, those terrorists had cut off a man's head. The scene of blood flowing like a river had been just like this.
Steve was more accustomed to the smell of blood, so he was the first to snap out of his daze. He raised his shield and looked at Schiller. Seeing the unfamiliar coldness in his eyes, Steve asked incredulously, "Who are you?"
Schiller withdrew his bloodstained umbrella blade without answering. The sound of mechanical parts grinding rang out as the faceplate of the Iron Man suit lifted. Stark stared at Schiller and asked, "Are you another one of his personalities? Or..."
Steve wanted to step forward, but Stark extended an arm to stop him. Schiller did not look at Baron Zemo's corpse on the ground. Rainwater washed the blood away, carrying it through the grooves in the earth past Schiller's feet, while he merely turned and looked toward the Egyptian gods facing off against them.
Schiller's sudden act of murder had also drawn their attention. Colored lights shone from their eyes, and as they stared intently in this direction, they looked like ghosts floating through the dark, rainy night.
Without Egypt's sun-drenched skies as a backdrop, the gods no longer looked quite so radiant. One of the women at their head spoke first:
"Khonshu, it seems Ammit was right. You have fallen in with these sinners!"
Another man's voice was even more furious. "You granted power to such murderers and let them carry out massacres. Khonshu, have you gone mad?!"
