It looked like the kind of setting an editor had dreamed up on a whim, but later editors had hinted in the comics that Spider-Man's origins were connected to the Spider Totem. That meant this ability had most likely been bestowed upon its apostles by the Spider Totem.
Through the Gray Mist, Schiller had determined that the strange sound from before was actually someone contacting him through Spider-Sense. The mysterious voice had told him that as long as he used Spider-Sense to communicate with the Spider Totem, he could travel to the mysterious place she had mentioned.
Schiller was not Spider-Man. He had not been chosen by the Spider Totem, nor had he been bitten by a spider. He had merely copied a low-level Spider-Sense ability through the system. It could be considered a weakened version of Peter Parker's Spider-Sense. It had no precognitive function and could only foresee danger moments in advance.
Therefore, Schiller did not know whether this weakened Spider-Sense could communicate with the Spider Totem. But that was fine. He could give it a try.
Meditation was not difficult for Schiller, but he did not know what the Spider Totem actually looked like, and that voice had not explained it clearly. So he meditated according to his own understanding.
