Schiller swept his gaze around the classroom and said,

"I know that all of you were sent here by someone. The people who sent you here may have told you that you had to study hard so you could work for them after you got out. Or they may have told you that you had to work diligently, master every bit of knowledge, and never make mistakes on the job that might cause them losses..."

"Perhaps those are the goals you've been striving toward as well. Am I right?"

The entire room fell silent. Everyone exchanged glances, but they all knew the answer in one another's hearts was yes.

All the students present were quite young, with the oldest only in their early twenties. Most of them were lower- or mid-ranking gang members. They had only been sent here because they were young, quick with their hands and minds, had participated in technical work before, and happened to get this opportunity.

Those gang bosses would never feed them any inspirational nonsense, nor would they offer the patient guidance parents might. They would only say, "Study hard once you get in. If you don't learn it, we'll blow your brains out."

Yet everyone was somewhat confused. They did not know why Schiller had brought this up, until they heard him say,

"No matter where you came from, what purpose brought you here, or how you have performed since arriving, I must tell you this: you are not studying for anyone else. You are studying for yourselves, for your future prospects, for your future living conditions..."
