Peter returned to Stark Tower. In the hallway, he called Coulson, but Coulson did not answer. He called Steve instead, and Steve's sorrowful, exhausted voice came through the line:
"Peter, I know you can't believe it. Stark didn't want to tell you because he was afraid of hurting you, but I just saw the body with my own eyes..."
Steve's voice began to tremble slightly. He said, "Maybe you don't know this, but although Nick has a long lifespan, it comes from a special drug. That drug isn't like my Super Soldier Serum. It can't give people extraordinary strength or healing abilities. Peter, Nick is different from us. He isn't a super-soldier. He's just an ordinary person."
"A sniper round passed through his chest and shattered his heart. I saw the hole in his chest and the fragments of his heart..." The grief in Steve's voice forced Peter to believe him.
He knew that the Captain would not lie, much less deliberately deceive him. And when he had dealt with Nick Fury before, his Spider-Sense had told him that the man before him posed no threat.
That meant that although Nick Fury might have been the King of Agents, his physical abilities had not surpassed those of an ordinary person by much. A single sniper bullet had been enough to kill him.
Then Schiller's voice came through the phone as well. He said, "Peter, don't overthink it. Go back to the lab. It'll be fine in a few days. We'll tell you when the funeral is held."
"I told you they wouldn't let this go! I warned Nick not to go alone, but he insisted on doing it! You were the one who sided with him back then. Happy now?!" Stark's voice came from the background, equally furious and grief-stricken.
