"Ahhh... urgh! Mmph!"

Just as Constantine cried out, Batman yanked him over and clapped a hand over his mouth.

Schiller, standing by the door, turned around. The sleeves of his straitjacket binding his hands had long restraint straps meant to secure them. Though Schiller's hands were fixed in place, the straps could move freely, lashing toward Constantine like agile whips.

After the initial fright, Constantine did not hesitate. He rolled first, slipping sideways over the hospital bed in front of him, then shoved the nearby cabinet over with all his strength.

The cabinet did not hit Schiller, but as it fell, the documents inside scattered out and blocked Schiller's vision. In those few brief seconds, Constantine grabbed Batman and rushed out of the room.

"The passage is in that room. We have to go through it to get out of here," Batman said as he followed Constantine. "That was the emergency exit. Where else are you going?"

"Emergency exit?!" Constantine raised his voice. "Didn't you see that I just came from there?... No, he's catching up again. Let's go downstairs first!"

With that, Constantine grabbed the stair railing, stopping his forward momentum, and dashed down the stairs.

The safety lights in the stairwell lent the cramped space a faint glow. It was then that Batman saw that most of the right side of Constantine's body was stained red with blood.

Perhaps because this was a memory space, Batman could not smell the blood, but he could hear Constantine's somewhat labored breathing. Clearly, Constantine was not in good shape.
