Early the next morning, Batman and Merkel quickly began their operation. Batman already had a ready-made interview subject: Hexagon. Although they did not work in the same area, Batman had a way to find him.

Hexagon worked deeper in the mine. Connecting the inside and outside of the mine were ore carts used to transport minerals. These carts were powered by magic and could run automatically without anyone controlling them. More importantly, to humans, the cargo compartments used for transporting ore were even bigger than train cars.

Baskets filled with excavated ore were dragged beside the tracks. Small demons and humans had to climb scaffolding to dump the ore into the carts. Overseers often wandered nearby, but they did not care if anyone approached the carts.

Sometimes a cart was loaded too heavily and could not move. The overseers responsible for guarding the carts would call over a few people to carry the ore back out and pile it into the next cart. To Batman, that was an opportunity.

Batman discovered that there was a wide gap between the bottom of the cart and the tracks, and the underside was not completely smooth. He could use the interval when ore was being transferred between carts to sneak underneath one, hide there, and ride it deeper into the mine.

The reason he had this opportunity was because Schiller was currently the one guarding the carts in this section.

After successfully carrying out his plan and lying beneath the cart as it rolled onward, Batman understood why intelligence work required not only broad infiltration, but deep infiltration as well.
