Background and History
Thor is Odin’s son and the chosen heir to Asgard. Odin considers him exceptionally strong and talented, qualities he regards as essential to the throne 1107. Thor grows up close to his brother Loki, often smoothing over trouble Loki causes, though his training and duties as heir leave them less time together 1113.
After disrupting his coronation and entering Jotunheim, Thor is sent to Earth 190. He initially resents Odin’s decision and struggles to listen to humans 190 195. Life without his powers forces him to find work, pay rent, and witness how little protection ordinary workers have against exploitation. He works as a mover and later loses an auto-shop job after standing up for a deceased colleague 196 233 234. An attack that wounds both Thor and Old Man White further changes his understanding of human suffering 235.
Loki’s schemes eventually bring Thor to Sakaar, where Thor questions the praise and honor on which he once relied 238. After regaining his power, he pursues control of thunder itself rather than the title of God of Thunder. He emerges as the God of Light and accepts responsibility for Asgard’s future 244 245.
Appearance
Thor’s appearance changes markedly between his exile and kingship:
- He arrives on Earth with long blond hair and battered medieval-style armor, including a badly deformed helmet 190.
- During his ordeal on Sakaar, his cheeks become sunken and his eyes deep-set 242.
- As God King, he wears carefully groomed hair and a beard with Asgardian royal robes; another appearance includes a jeweled crown, cape, and braided hair 1979 4000.
Personality
Thor begins as a proud, blunt warrior who expects respect for his status and readily charges into conflict 190 567. He is also compassionate: Peter finds that Thor sincerely wants to do good, and Thor later intervenes when he believes Helen is in danger 195 680.
His experience on Earth and Sakaar makes him more willing to examine his mistakes 233 238 245. As king, he can choose restraint over war, as he does after a killing at his banquet threatens relations with the Shi’ar Empire 1371. His temper remains a weakness; anger causes him to abandon better tactics during a fight with Stark 567.
