It was isolated from the world, with no roads connecting it to the outside. It was the only gathering place for Inhumans on Earth.
Every Inhuman who lived here had been carefully selected. Only after their bloodline had been confirmed beyond doubt were they brought here to undergo the awakening ritual.
And once awakened, the Inhumans would, just like the village's name implied, welcome a brand-new life—as though they had entered an afterlife.
Some chose to stay forever and live alongside their true kin. Others returned to modern society, building a secret network known only to Inhumans, staying in touch, helping one another, and hiding among ordinary people.
If S.H.I.E.L.D. had not found this place, Afterlife would likely have continued its ancient traditions and kept this secret hidden forever.
