Chapter 26: Caiaphas Cain and Jurgen and You (Part 2)

[You finish warming up. After a brief skirmish, all the "rebels" actually lay down their arms and surrender.]

[You believe this small group of Defense Force soldiers aren't rebels at all—they're just mortal troops whose courage was shattered by the rolling tide of greenskins.]

[After all, even their battle cry is about not wanting to be sent to the front lines to die by the Imperial Commissar.]

[You gun down a few more "rebels" who try to incite the soldiers.]

[Comrade Jurgen hoists the Heavy Flamer he never abandoned, and a brutal slaughter is about to unfold.]

[Commissar Cain timely stops your and Jurgen's "savage" behavior.]

[Cain climbs onto the top of a Chimera APC and delivers a passionate speech to the dejected, armor-casting Defense Force about how retreat is actually an advance, his words brimming with fervor and inspiration.]

[You remain noncommittal, but before the speech even ends, the entire Defense Force surrounds Commissar Cain with fervent adoration. Every soldier's morale soars, their fighting spirit ignited, as if they can't wait to fight the Orks another three hundred rounds.]

[Commissar Cain miraculously gains command authority over this small Defense Force unit.]

[You're baffled and seek Cain out to ask. Commissar Cain smiles and replies: he just gave them a hope of survival.]

[Week three: transitioning from foot travel to motorized movement, you encounter more local refugees fleeing on their own journeys, along with more Defense Force troops routed by the greenskins. After careful deliberation, Commissar Cain, leveraging his exceptional eloquence, rallies the routed soldiers and calms the panicked local refugees, forming a massive fleeing column.]

[You and Jurgen quietly deal with a few unruly troublemakers while also taking on the arduous duty of protecting the local refugees.]

[However, as your numbers and equipment grow, your bloated, cumbersome fleeing column seems to attract more attention from the greenskins.]

[They ride battered, scrap-pieced junk bikes, brandishing huge choppas and oversized shootas, beginning to intercept and pursue your column.]

[Week four: the situation for the fleeing column takes a turn for the worse. While food supplies and ammunition aren't lacking, the ever-increasing number of greenskins becomes a far deadlier problem.]

[Commissar Cain believes an Ork Warlord must have discovered your column and issued orders to block and pursue. You and Comrade Jurgen gradually grow exhausted from dealing with the frequent greenskin appearances.]

[On Commissar Cain's advice, you temporarily set aside your Lasgun and clumsily attempt to command the Defense Force troops you've fully absorbed. You barely qualify as an officer, and your perspective shifts from individual combat to the entire battlefield.]

[You lead the Defense Force on sorties, stubbornly holding back the rolling tide of greenskins.]

[The fleeing column takes a brief rest. Commissar Cain finds you while you're resting.]

[Cain's expression is grave as he states that if you can't shake the large number of greenskins trailing the column, it will be difficult to successfully reach Imperial territory.]

[You steel yourself and offer to lead a suicide squad composed of Defense Force troops, attempting to redirect the greenskins' advance.]

[Commissar Cain gives a slight smile and politely declines, stating that the Valhallan 597th Regiment has no battlefield custom of abandoning comrades.]

[Week five: you, Commissar Cain, Comrade Jurgen, and a batch of Defense Force volunteers who joined the suicide squad choose a Chimera APC with a stable machine-spirit and launch a fierce delaying action against the greenskins trailing the column.]

[Your mission is very simple: draw the attention of a large number of greenskins, buying time for the fleeing column composed mainly of local refugees.]

[The brutality of this battle exceeds imagination. Of the ten suicide squad Defense Force members, over half are killed or wounded before you barely complete the mission, luring away a massive horde of greenskins.]

[Inside the speeding Chimera APC, you tend to your wounds. You glance at Commissar Cain and find him completely unharmed—it's almost unbelievable...]

[Week six: under Commissar Cain's leadership, your remaining eight-man suicide squad fights a guerrilla war against the greenskins. When the greenskins stop to rest, you harass them, throw grenades. When the enraged greenskins give chase, you use the Chimera APC's mobility and firepower to shake them off.]

[Due to the increasing number of engagements, the five Defense Force members in the suicide squad have sharpened their combat skills considerably. None of them fear greenskins anymore; instead, their eyes light up at the sight of them, eager for a fight.]

[Lucky for you, you gradually approach Imperial territory. Comrade Jurgen believes victory is at hand, and even you can't help but agree with the thought.]

[Unfortunately, the Ork Warlord, who had been waiting for you all along, blocks your path.]

[The sudden encounter battle catches you off guard. The suicide squad loses three members instantly. You're surrounded by countless greenskins, and the Chimera APC's mobility advantage is completely nullified.]

[Facing annihilation, Commissar Cain, without changing his expression, proposes a plan to capture the chieftain first.]

[You don't hesitate for a moment, silently carrying several terrifyingly powerful Melta Bombs.]

[The suicide squad members use the Chimera APC's firepower to occupy the other greenskins, while you, Commissar Cain, and Jurgen assault the Ork Warlord's position.]

[Comrade Jurgen's Heavy Flamer once again proves its worth, its powerful fire briefly clearing a path straight toward the Ork Warlord.]

[You charge ahead of Commissar Cain, firing your Lasgun indiscriminately, almost every shot dropping a greenskin.]

[Yet the number of greenskins never seems to diminish, surging toward the two of you like a tide.]

[You and Commissar Cain are both bogged down by the greenskin encirclement, and Comrade Jurgen's Heavy Flamer is also about to sputter out.]

[At the critical moment, you show Commissar Cain the Melta Bombs you're carrying.]

[Commissar Cain's face shows hesitation, but in the end, he nods firmly.]

[Taking advantage of another path cleared by Jurgen's Heavy Flamer, you launch your final death charge toward the Ork Warlord.]

[When you're still five meters from the Ork Warlord, you're gravely wounded. You have no choice but to detonate the Melta Bomb early, attempting to harm the Ork Warlord.]

[You are instantly vaporized into ash by the extreme heat.]

[You are dead.]
