Chapter 1987: Leading the Class

After seeing Lacus off from the academy, Athrun stood outside the teaching building and looked toward Xiao Ran's office, his heart filled with confusion. The news Lacus had told him was simply too explosive. Before this, he had never imagined that the Masked Man carrying the title of their Chief Instructor had anything special about him, much less had he ever truly interacted with him.
Yet that seemingly idle man had turned out to be personally invited by his father Patrick and Lacus's father Siegel to teach them, and he had even earned such respect and importance from Lacus.
What Athrun had not expected even more was that this group of high-ranking families' children, who seemed to have joined ZAFT only because the war situation was growing increasingly severe and because they needed to serve as the upper echelon's representatives and public face, had actually been gathered together because of Xiao Ran. Their admission into ZAFT had not been about appearances at all. Most of them had entered this class only because Xiao Ran had personally selected and approved them.
Even more astonishingly, there were quite a few people in this class whom he had failed to realize had come from Orb. Since when had ZAFT needed to assist Orb to such an extent, using its own resources to create specialized machines for Orb's people? To Athrun, it was utterly unbelievable.
"People from Orb... who could they be?" Athrun muttered. Before long, however, three possible candidates surfaced in his mind. They were three girls, but not Tinia, Katia, or Melua.
"Asachi, Julie, and Mayura... are they from Orb? Naturals?"
