At dusk on the very day Zhang Chen fought the Snake Emperor.
In a residential complex in Jinxi, a man named Hu Yun hurried out of his home, his face filled with anxiety.
After toiling away at work all day, Hu Yun had not called his wife of three years. When he returned home, he happened to see the top news story on television, and the site of the incident was County Second Middle School, not far from his wife's workplace.
When he picked up his phone to contact his wife, the automated message said the call could not be connected. Having only just returned home and barely had a chance to rest, he immediately got up and headed for her workplace.
"Rumble!"
The car parked in the underground garage slowly left the complex. As it neared the entrance, Hu Yun, seated in the driver's seat, could not help turning his head to look toward a corner of the complex.
"What was that? A beggar?"
In Hu Yun's eyes, a pitch-black humanoid creature was crouching motionlessly in the corner. He assumed it was a filthy beggar who had slipped into the complex to cool off, or perhaps had some other ill intentions.
As he left the complex, although Hu Yun did not like meddling in other people's business, the image of that beggar-like shadow crouching against the wall kept surfacing in his mind, making him deeply uncomfortable.
"Old Wang, a beggar got into the complex. He's in the corner by Building Three. Shouldn't you send someone to deal with it? If he's mentally unstable and attacks someone here, that'll be trouble."
As he swiped his card to leave the complex, Hu Yun stuck his head out the car window and spoke to Old Wang, the captain in the security booth.
