Reluctance

"Are you coming out now, Mr. Brian?"

Chang Wei looked at Brian, a trace of confusion in his voice.

The two of them were sitting at the edge of the camp, surrounded by already-lit bonfires. The flames danced in the night, bringing a touch of warmth and light to the dark forest.

Brian did not answer right away. His gaze remained fixed on the bonfire, its flickering light casting shadows across his resolute face.

He seemed to be thinking about something. After a while, he finally spoke slowly. "Go get some rest. I'll keep watch here."

Little Tifa was already asleep, and Little Cloud had been exhausted all day. He had probably fallen asleep the moment his head hit the ground, so Brian did not need to worry about being discovered if he came out now.

He knew a child's energy was limited, even during the most energetic years of their life.

And he was still an adult. It was only one night—he could stay up!

"But Mr. Brian, you've been standing guard all day. You need to rest too."

Chang Wei spoke with some concern.

"If you don't get enough sleep, how will you have the energy to protect us during the day, Mr. Brian?"

Chang Wei could not help yawning.

Brian looked at Chang Wei, warmth flashing through his eyes.

He gently shook his head and said, "You don't need to worry about me. I can still hold on."

"I wasn't carrying nearly as much stuff as you were. That little bit of walking was less than a warm-up for me."

"But..."

Chang Wei wanted to say more, but Brian interrupted him.

"No buts. Go get some rest now. I'll wake you when it gets light."
