Background / History

Vegeta arrived with Nappa after their scouters detected Chang Wei’s ki. Identifying himself as the Saiyan Prince, he initially attacked Chang Wei, only to be effortlessly defeated despite possessing 18,000 Battle Power. Chang Wei claimed to be his uncle and used overwhelming strength—including a displayed Battle Power of 100,000—to force Vegeta into accepting the claim. 358

Chang Wei taught Vegeta that Saiyans gain immense strength after recovering from near-fatal injuries. Vegeta recognized this as the cause of his childhood growth, but realized he had stagnated after becoming too strong to be seriously wounded. 360 Chang Wei subsequently placed Vegeta and Nappa in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Vegeta trained for two years and reached 120,000 Battle Power. His pride led him to challenge Chang Wei immediately, but Chang Wei defeated him and revealed an even greater gap. 363

On Namek, Vegeta pursued Namekian healing as a method of repeatedly triggering Saiyan near-death growth. He tested Dende’s healing on Nappa and proposed enslaving the Namekians to secure this resource. He also accepted Chang Wei’s claim that Earthling-Saiyan offspring possessed exceptional Super Saiyan potential, leading him to support the conquest of Earth and the revival of the Saiyan race. 376

Vegeta is intensely proud, competitive, and power-driven. He reacts violently to humiliation, especially when Chang Wei calls him weak or inferior, and repeatedly declares his intention to become the strongest Saiyan. 364 379 His pride can make him reckless: he challenged opponents such as Android 17, Great Buu, and Broly despite being outmatched. 388 435 460

He is also pragmatic when strength is at stake.
