Background / History
Vegeta arrived with Nappa after their scouters detected Chang Wei’s ki. Identifying himself as the Saiyan Prince, he initially attacked Chang Wei, only to be effortlessly defeated despite possessing 18,000 Battle Power. Chang Wei claimed to be his uncle and used overwhelming strength—including a displayed Battle Power of 100,000—to force Vegeta into accepting the claim. 358
Chang Wei taught Vegeta that Saiyans gain immense strength after recovering from near-fatal injuries. Vegeta recognized this as the cause of his childhood growth, but realized he had stagnated after becoming too strong to be seriously wounded. 360 Chang Wei subsequently placed Vegeta and Nappa in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Vegeta trained for two years and reached 120,000 Battle Power. His pride led him to challenge Chang Wei immediately, but Chang Wei defeated him and revealed an even greater gap. 363
On Namek, Vegeta pursued Namekian healing as a method of repeatedly triggering Saiyan near-death growth. He tested Dende’s healing on Nappa and proposed enslaving the Namekians to secure this resource. He also accepted Chang Wei’s claim that Earthling-Saiyan offspring possessed exceptional Super Saiyan potential, leading him to support the conquest of Earth and the revival of the Saiyan race. 376
After settling on Earth, Vegeta entered a relationship with Bulma and became Trunks’s father. Fatherhood gradually made him more restrained than before, though his fixation on surpassing Chang Wei and Sun Wukong remained unchanged. 377 378 380
Personality
Vegeta is intensely proud, competitive, and power-driven. He reacts violently to humiliation, especially when Chang Wei calls him weak or inferior, and repeatedly declares his intention to become the strongest Saiyan. 364 379 His pride can make him reckless: he challenged opponents such as Android 17, Great Buu, and Broly despite being outmatched. 388 435 460
He is also pragmatic when strength is at stake. Vegeta quickly recognized the value of Namekian healing, planned to use it to strengthen the Saiyan race, and viewed Earthling-Saiyan descendants primarily through their combat potential. 376 428 Over time, his family and Chang Wei’s control tempered some of his aggression; he became more patient with Sun Wukong and led the Empire’s strongest Super Saiyan unit. 380 422
Beerus is a rare exception to Vegeta’s usual defiance. When confronted by the God of Destruction, he trembled, attempted to protect Chang Wei through appeasement, and showed none of his usual willingness to test an overwhelmingly powerful opponent. 478
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Near-Death Growth
Vegeta can gain substantial Battle Power after suffering near-fatal injuries and recovering.
- He recognized that childhood recoveries in medical pods had strengthened him without his realizing why. 360
- Namekian healing allows him to pursue this growth method without relying solely on Senzu Beans. 376
- The method eventually produced diminishing returns as his potential approached a bottleneck. 378
Super Saiyan Transformations
Vegeta has developed several Super Saiyan states through training, rage, and combat.
- His first Super Saiyan transformation was driven by fury and refusal to accept his weakness relative to Chang Wei. 387
- His Second Stage, which he names “Super Vegeta,” emphasizes brute force and speed. 395
- Super Saiyan Full Power improved his foundation, while Power Type Full Power combined that foundation with a more force-oriented form. 391 410
- He can access Super Saiyan 3 Full Power, though prolonged Super Saiyan 3 use previously exhausted his energy. 434 435
- His Overclocked Super Vegeta state combines an Overclocked boost with Super Saiyan transformation for a five-thousandfold base-strength increase. 442
Steel Skin and Supernatural Regeneration
Vegeta cultivated ki-based bodily reinforcement to compensate for Saiyans’ comparatively weak physical durability.
- Steel Skin strengthens cells with ki and is described as immune to blades and spears. 428
- Vegeta’s Steel Skin surpassed Cell’s natural toughness. 428
- Supernatural Regeneration rapidly restores his injuries and energy after Steel Skin cultivation. 435
- He had completed Steel Body training by the time he confronted Broly. 457
Ki Techniques
Vegeta employs a range of ki attacks and high-speed combat techniques.
- Kikoho — a ki blast used against Chang Wei and later to test Broly. 358 457
- Special Beam Cannon — used against Android 17, though it failed to overcome him. 383
- Flash Step / Light Elementalization — high-speed movement techniques; Vegeta can turn into particles of light to reposition in combat. 410 442
- Ultra Full Power Prince Kick — launched Cell out of Earth’s orbit while Vegeta fought for a breakthrough. 411
- Lightning Flash Fist — a technique Vegeta mastered over a year before fighting Broly. 460
- Divine Light Sword — a technique passed down to Trunks, who used it against Cell. 402
Fusion
Vegeta successfully fused with Sun Wukong to create Vegito during the battle against Broly and Gaskako.
- Vegito possesses traits of both fighters and identifies himself as Trunks’s father as well. 467
- The fusion later entered Super Saiyan 3 Full Power and fought Broly across planetary distances. 470
Equipment / Items
- Battle Power Scouter — used during his first encounter with Chang Wei; it exploded when Chang Wei raised his displayed Battle Power past 10,000. 358
- Super Scouter — created by Chang Wei after Vegeta repeatedly demanded Battle Power measurements; it can measure values to three decimal places. 378
Relationships
- Chang Wei — Claimed uncle and Saiyan Emperor. Chang Wei manipulated Vegeta into accepting the relationship through fabricated history and overwhelming power, then repeatedly trained, mocked, and controlled him. 358 363 422
- Bulma — Partner and Queen Consort of the Saiyan Empire. Vegeta initially resisted Chang Wei’s order to have a child with her, but accepted the relationship in part because Bulma could support his training. 377 477
- Trunks — Son. Vegeta trained with him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, passed down techniques to him, and intervened when Broly overwhelmed him. 391 402 459
- Nappa — Fellow Saiyan and longtime subordinate. Vegeta often directs him in battle and used him to test the benefits of Namekian healing and near-death recovery. 358 376
- Sun Wukong — Rival and eventual ally. Their competition accelerated Vegeta’s growth, while Vegeta later became less hostile and more patient toward him. 379 380
- Salif — Cousin and fellow Saiyan combatant. Vegeta helped train him, recognizing his potential despite treating him harshly. 408
- Broly — Legendary Super Saiyan adversary. Vegeta initially tested him out of imperial confidence, then fought to protect Trunks and was decisively defeated. 457 459 460
- Beerus — God of Destruction whose presence causes Vegeta visible fear despite Vegeta’s usual arrogance. 478
