Night had already fallen, in the neighboring complex less than five hundred meters in a straight line from Xi Nian's home.
Inside a room.
After finishing dinner, taking a shower, and changing into a long-sleeved home pajama set, Gwen was lying face down on the bed. The girl buried her head ostrich-like among the plush toys, her youthful, vibrant body completely still. However, the pair of feet rhythmically kicking at the down comforter undoubtedly betrayed the hidden worries weighing on her mind.
"Gwen."
Officer George, still in his police uniform, came to the door and gently knocked on the closed door, asking through it: "Want a cup of hot cocoa?"
"No, it'll make me fat."
Inside the room, Gwen remained motionless on the bed, her voice sounding somewhat listless.
Officer George spoke with a hint of puzzlement: "Who was it that said, when they were little, they wanted to live in a castle made of chocolate and cake and be a princess?"
"Dad, stop bringing up my past!" Gwen said, a bit embarrassed and angry, shouting: "Especially not when—" She cut herself off mid-sentence.
Officer George sighed and finished her thought: "Especially not at your school. And when that kid is around, right?"
"No way. Anyway, he already knows." Though Gwen said this, her tone grew more and more dejected, and the plush toys pressing down on her head began to tremble slightly.
"Gwen." Officer George took a deep breath, as if making the most important decision of his life in that moment, and said firmly in a low voice: "If you really like that kid Xi Nian, then go ahead and confess your feelings! Your dad, I will definitely support you from behind!"
Inside the room.
The plush toys pressing down on the girl's head stopped trembling. After three seconds of silence, they were all sent flying off the bed.
"Dad, what are you saying?!"
Gwen jumped straight up from the bed, sitting cross-legged on the comforter, her hands kneading a pillow out of shape. Her face, whether from being buried too long or from hitting on a sensitive topic, was flushed with a rapidly rising heat that made one suspect steam would burst out any second.
Beads of sweat appeared, and a few strands of golden hair stuck to the girl's cheeks.
"I don't... like Xi Nian!" Gwen was mortified and angry, instinctively wanting to argue as a girl would, but because she paused mid-sentence, her rebuttal came out as pale and weak as blank paper.
"Alright, alright, I'm just saying 'if,' just an 'if.'"
Officer George, standing outside the door, understood perfectly. He wanted to say something more, but unfortunately, the pager on his sleeve suddenly beeped.
Officer George immediately answered: "This is Officer George, what's going on?"
Knowing there was an emergency, Gwen inside the room quickly quieted down.
"Hmm?" Listening to the report from his subordinate officer on the pager, Officer George's already serious face grew even more grim: "You're saying a woman in strange clothes dropped from the sky and robbed an armored cash truck?"
"Understood, it's not far from my location. I'll be there immediately!"
Officer George put down the pager and hurriedly called into the room: "Gwen, I have to go out for a bit. You stay home."
"Okay. Dad, be safe." Gwen replied.
"I will." Officer George nodded, then quickly left the house.
Inside the room.
The heat on Gwen's face subsided a little. Thinking about her father's words, she murmured to herself: "A woman dropping from the sky?"
"Could it be a mutant or a superhuman?"
Gwen frowned, growing more worried about her father's safety.
In this world, people with abilities beyond ordinary humans were very rare, but that didn't mean they didn't exist!
Because she was one of them!
Gwen quickly went to the wardrobe in her room. After pushing all the clothes aside to both ends and opening a hidden compartment at the very back of the wardrobe, she revealed what was concealed behind it—
A complete set of strange, form-fitting suits in black and white.
The suit was white from the neck to the chest, and from the chest down, covering the abdomen, hips, and legs, it was the opposite—black. Besides the white hood that could cover the head, the suit also came with an additional attached hood, the inside of which had a black-and-red pattern like a spider web.
Apart from the strange female spider-suit and hood, the compartment also contained a pair of green, low-cut special shoes.
Without thinking too much, Gwen took out the hood, suit, and shoes. She also grabbed three ordinary band-aids from the bottom drawer of the wardrobe, tearing them open with her teeth. Soon, as her home pajamas, including the clothes underneath, fell piece by piece to the floor, Gwen put on the entire female spider-suit.
After changing into the spider-suit.
Gwen gently pressed her palms to the floor, moving in a low, hunting-like crouch, like a crawling spider, without making a single sound.
She turned the radio on the desk to a pure music channel, creating the illusion that she was focused on her homework, then pushed open the window of her room. Glancing back at the closed door, she gripped the window sill with both hands, applied a little force, and her body nimbly and agilely slipped out the window.
Keep in mind, although Gwen's home wasn't as high as Xi Nian's, it was still on the tenth floor, nearly thirty meters up in the air!
Gwen's perspective flipped, the night-shrouded city below inverted and reflected in her eyes.
She leaped, soaring ten meters into the air. Just as she was about to fall, she flicked her wrist, and an inconspicuous white strand of webbing shot out, accurately hitting the eaves of a neighboring tall building.
Gwen pulled on the resilient webbing with her hand, her small body adjusting its angle and launching forward again, following the police car blaring its siren below as it sped toward the opposite street.
At that moment, at the intersection on the opposite street.
The cars parked along the roadside all set off their automatic alarms. Many pedestrians screamed "Robbery!" and fled outward. In front of the Central Bank, an armored cash truck was parked.
But right now, the truck's roof, which was advertised as bulletproof, had been violently smashed into a huge dent. A woman in strange battle armor, gripping a retro longsword, was lying on top of the now-wrecked cash truck. Quite a few green banknotes were being flung out of the shattered cabin, giving a clear idea of the immense impact force from the fall.
That's right, this so-called 'strange woman' was none other than their Xi Nian.
It wasn't surprising that others misjudged his gender—Xi Nian's skirt-style battle armor was clearly feminine in design, and the silver hair cascading over his shoulders all but cemented his apparent sex.
"My God!"
"You—who the hell are you?"
Two fully armed special police stood near the armored cash truck. They froze in shock for a few seconds before their solid mental training kicked in, and they drew their guns, barking out their question.
But the constant trembling in their legs made it obvious they were scared out of their wits.
"If I said I accidentally fell here from my own home on the sixteenth floor, would you believe me?"
As much as Xi Nian wanted to answer that way, opening his mouth would expose him as a pervert—ahem—as a boy, in fact.
The main issue was that no matter how he explained it now, it wouldn't make sense. After all, a normal person falling from the sixteenth floor—let alone surviving unscathed—would be lucky to even have their body intact!
So, lying on the armored cash truck, he thought for less than half a second.
Ignoring the special police aiming their guns at him, Xi Nian flipped up with lightning speed, leaped off the roof of the truck, and bolted down the road, fleeing the scene!
His speed was now far too fast; his movements left afterimages, and by the time the special police reacted, he was already over ten meters away!
