Wu Heng frowned and took a step back. "May I know the reason?"
"Specialized Profession, a death occurred, and we suspect you have a closer connection to the Wanted Criminal." The guard spoke, listing several unreasonable excuses.
"So according to you, a Wanted Criminal can try to kill me, but I'm not allowed to fight back?" Wu Heng retorted.
The Guard Captain's gaze turned cold. The men behind him also placed their hands on the Iron Swords at their waists.
Wu Heng's expression grew serious as well.
Did this place have no sense of reason at all?
Still, he had no intention of resisting.
If he fought the guards now, it would confirm the charges against him.
Even if killing the Wanted Criminal proved to be fine, attacking guards would become fresh evidence of guilt.
Just as the guards prepared to take him away, the staff member who had left earlier hurried back.
She frowned at the aggressive guards, then said to Wu Heng, "Mr. Wu Heng, the executive wishes to see you."
An executive?
An Adventurer's Guild executive?
Wu Heng did not answer. Instead, he glanced at the guards before him.
The staff member continued, "Gentlemen, please wait here for a moment."
This Adventurer's Guild really was not as simple as it appeared.
Even an ordinary receptionist spoke to the guards with complete confidence.
The guards frowned, but they still moved aside and cleared a path.
Wu Heng followed the staff member down the corridor she had come from. They climbed the stairs on one side to the second floor and stopped before a door. She said softly, "Executive, Mr. Wu Heng has arrived."
"Let him in!"
Pushing open the door, Wu Heng saw a man seated in a room lined with bookshelves and files. He wore formal attire, and his hair was streaked with white.
He might not have been that old, yet he gave off the impression of someone recovering from a serious illness.
The staff member who had led him in stepped forward, whispered a few words into the man's ear, and then withdrew.
The man's gaze settled on Wu Heng. "My name is Yazde. I am the executive stationed in Blackstone Town."
"It is an honor to meet you, Executive Yazde."
"No need to be so formal. Have a seat. That is your bounty reward. You may choose only one skill book." The man carried himself with elegance, like a nobleman.
A leather Money Pouch and two old books with curled edges lay on the desk.
After Wu Heng sat down, his eyes fell on the books.
Dancing Lights
(Description: You can create floating sources of light.)
A light spell?
What use was that?
He had found several flashlights in Zombie World, and they still had battery power.
He had no use for it at the moment.
Acid Splash
(Description: Releases a sphere of acid, dealing strong acid damage to the target.)
Throwing sulfuric acid?
Why were the spells in this world so different from what he had imagined?
Where were the fireballs and lightning bolts?
"I'll choose this one." Wu Heng put away both the Money Pouch and Acid Splash.
The man nodded and said in a casual tone, "I heard you ran into some trouble before I called you here?"
"Yes. The guards wanted to take me in for questioning, claiming I fought without authorization."
"Haha, Necromancers are disliked everywhere. That is normal." The man smiled as he spoke and poured two cups of tea, handing one to him.
Wu Heng was in no mood to drink tea and make small talk with him. He asked directly, "What did Executive Yazde wish to see me about?"
The man picked up his teacup, took a sip, and slowly said, "Do you want to change your situation?"
"What do you mean?" Wu Heng looked at him curiously.
"I can offer you a suggestion. You will no longer need to worry about others causing you trouble, and you will have a certain degree of authority."
Those words stirred something in Wu Heng's heart.
A Necromancer was useful in Zombie World, but in Blackstone Town, he was treated as a burden.
If there was a way to resolve that, he was willing to hear it.
"What is your suggestion?"
The man smiled. "The Adventurer's Guild accepts any Adventurer with a clean record and will become their solid backing."
Join the Adventurer's Guild?
"I am already a registered member of the Adventurer's Guild."
Based on the information he had received,
the Adventurer's Guild was more like a mercenary registry.
It maintained its operations by posting various missions and bounties.
"I mean a permanent member of the Association, not a registered member. You can think of it as becoming an employee of the Association. You would have legal status in the vast majority of cities and factions across the world, along with certain privileges."
Wu Heng's eyes lit up at those words.
If that was the case, becoming a member of the Adventurer's Guild would be an excellent choice.
But he quickly suppressed his excitement and asked, "What would I need to do?"
"Complete certain missions issued by Association Headquarters. You may be sent to investigate locations or gather intelligence," the man explained patiently.
Wu Heng hesitated. "I don't like taking risks, and capturing that fugitive was only luck. I have no real strength of my own."
"Don't worry. Most Association missions involve assisting local guards, and we do not encourage dangerous behavior like apprehending fugitives alone."
The man raised his eyes to look at him, then continued, "Of course, the Association can provide many benefits as well—intelligence, knowledge, Magic Items, money, connections. In short, not everyone can obtain this position."
By the sound of it, the Adventurer's Guild's benefits really were quite good.
Most importantly, it could free him from his situation as a Necromancer, so he would no longer have to live like a criminal.
"Why choose me?"
He did not believe he was some Child of Destiny. If he were, the world would not have ended before he could even start reselling goods.
The man continued explaining, "Branch Associations can recruit talent on their own. Besides the usual combat personnel, those with special abilities and rare professions are also included. Of course, they must have clean identities and no criminal records."
"Was I selected because I'm a Necromancer?"
"Necromancer fully qualifies as a rare profession here. And those without criminal records are even rarer."
This Adventurer's Guild really was strange. Blackstone Town despised him so much, yet this man wanted to recruit him.
Wu Heng quickly thought it over.
Joining seemed to have little impact on him. On the contrary, it offered more benefits.
There was no reason to refuse.
With a legitimate identity, he could make better use of Blackstone Town to improve himself and no longer have so many misgivings.
Having thought it through, Wu Heng smiled. "Thank you for your trust, Mr. Yazde. Can I join the Adventurer's Guild here?"
The man smiled and nodded. He opened a drawer and took out a form. "Fill in your information. You should receive a response in three or four days."
Wu Heng nodded and carefully read through its contents.
After filling in his information, he handed it back.
The man took the document, gave it a cursory glance, and placed it in the drawer. Then he stood up. "Come on. I'll take you to see the corpse first."
A corpse?
