White-lipped Bamboo Viper: Its head is triangular, its neck slender, and its shape resembles a branding iron. Fine scales cover the top of its head, and a loreal pit lies on the side of its snout. Its upper jaw bears only White-lipped Bamboo Viper solenoglyphous fangs, and it is highly venomous. Its back is vivid green with faint black crossbands; its belly is yellowish-white. A white stripe runs along the outermost side of its body from its neck to its tail; its upper lip is yellowish-white. The scales between its nostrils are large; there are generally no scales between the nasal scale and the loreal pit.

They lived year-round in damp mountain streamsides, weedy thickets, and bamboo groves. Their green coloration and prehensile tails made them well suited to arboreal life. They often hung from or coiled around tree branches and bamboo branches by streams. Since both their bodies and habitats were green, they were extremely difficult to spot. Sometimes, they also coiled atop rocks with their heads facing the stream.
When startled, they slowly swam into the water. They were active both day and night, though more frequently at night. Bamboo Vipers were common venomous snakes and belonged to the solenoglyphous type. On average, each bite delivered around 28 milligrams of venom. They preyed on birds, frogs, and rodents, and hibernated. Their hibernation period lasted from Major Snow to Awakening of Insects, and they emerged from their dens in May. They were ovoviviparous, giving birth to seven or eight young at a time from July to August. Newly born snakes already had venomous fangs and could injure people.
