The Super Planet Destroyer Cannon's shells were actually a type of Warp Speed Missile, as well as an application of Negative Energy weaponry. The principle behind their ability to destroy stars could be summed up in one sentence: Miracles Through Brute Force.
Their shells were made with Positive and Negative Matter materials and fitted with a Warp Engine. Inside a warship's cannon, the shell would be accelerated to a relative speed extremely close to light speed with respect to its target. Once it left the barrel, the Warp Engine would activate and carry it forward at maximum warp.
Just before the shell reached its target, the fuse inside would activate. This caused the Positive and Negative Matter within to instantly lose their original isolation effect, creating a momentary repulsive force. The Positive Matter would be hurled outward by the Negative Matter like one final kick, pushing it beyond its already near-light speed and sending it plunging straight into the star.
Matter moving at near-light speed possessed an enormous relativistic mass relative to its target, enough to blow up a star in one strike.
Planet Destroyer Cannons that pursued even greater power would replace Positive and Negative Matter with Antimatter and Negative Antimatter.
The instant such a shell touched a star, it possessed incomparable kinetic energy. Combined with the energy released by the annihilation of the Antimatter warhead itself, it would blast the star apart without leaving even scraps behind.
That was how the Solar System had been destroyed back then.
