Eichi continued searching for wild Pokémon when, before long, a Rattata darted out of the nearby grass.

The Weedle following behind Eichi immediately rushed in front of him.

"Weedle, use String Shot!"

Weedle aimed at the Rattata and spat silk. Rattata tried to dodge, but failed.

It was tightly bound by the silk Weedle had spun.

"Weedle, use Poison Sting!"

Weedle curled its tail and thrust it at the Rattata.

Unable to escape, the Rattata took the sting head-on.

With a miserable cry, it lost its ability to battle and collapsed onto the ground.

Seeing that the Rattata had lost its ability to battle, Weedle looked at Eichi and chirped, "Shoo, shoo."

Its body swayed from side to side. These two battles seemed to have made Weedle very proud.

Eichi rubbed the back of Weedle's head and smiled. "All that hard training I put you through was so that today, you could defeat them with ease."

After saying that, he walked over to the Rattata and peeled the Bug silk off its body.

He then took out a Potion from his backpack. Though the Rattata had not been poisoned, it was still badly injured.

Finally, he left some Pokémon food for the Rattata.

Naturally, it was the cheapest Pokémon food available.

It was compensation for them. Eichi felt quite sorry about it too.

He had beaten them up for no reason. If he did not compensate them a little, he would not be able to live with himself.

Compared to those people who ran off after beating them, Eichi felt that he was still far too kind.

Next, Eichi planned to pick some more valuable Berries.

He usually picked Berries to sell for money as well.

But they were all fairly ordinary Berries with no particular effects. They were simply tasty and nutritious.

Only occasionally would he find Oran Berries or Pecha Berries... but never many.

Moreover, powerful Pokémon guarded every large Berry tree.

The moment anyone approached, they would attack and drive them away.

Eichi was fairly lucky. He found an unclaimed small Berry tree with several Oran Berries on it.

Oran Berries restored 10 HP when eaten by Pokémon, at least in the games.

Their effects in reality were roughly the same. They could restore stamina.

Eichi picked every ripe Oran Berry from the tree.

Then he took a box from his backpack. This box was specially made for holding Berries.

Most precious Berries were not large, about the size of strawberries.

Eichi counted them. There were seven Oran Berries.

After putting them away, Eichi continued searching for Berries.

But Eichi's luck was not as good afterward.

An hour passed, and Eichi did not find a single Berry.

However, he encountered quite a few Pokémon—either Caterpie, Weedle, Rattata, or Venonat.

Weedle defeated all of them, though they did encounter a Pidgey along the way.

Since it was Weedle's first time encountering a Pidgey, it was a little timid.

And Pidgey reacted quickly. Weedle's String Shot actually missed, and Pidgey dodged it several times.

In the end, Weedle only managed to defeat it after landing a Poison Sting by sheer luck.

This left Weedle a little dejected. Eichi comforted it, saying, "It's fine. Train hard when we get back, and it won't happen next time."

Eichi made a full circuit around Viridian Forest but failed to find any more Berries. After giving it some thought...

Most of the Berries on the outskirts of Viridian Forest had already been picked clean.

If he wanted to keep searching, he could only go deeper into Viridian Forest.

But entering Viridian Forest meant danger.

Eichi weighed the pros and cons in his heart, but in the end, he could not resist the temptation of Berries.

Eichi decided to go only a little deeper, no farther.

The deeper he went into Viridian Forest, the dimmer the light became.

It was said that deep within Viridian Forest, it was pitch-black whether it was day or night.

Eichi was walking rather cautiously now, but after about half an hour...

He had not encountered any powerful Pokémon, so he was no longer as afraid.

Eichi decided not to go any deeper and to stay active around this area instead.

Suddenly, he heard a bird cry. Listening closely, it seemed to be the cry of a Fearow.

The bird cry gradually drew closer.

"Fearow!"

Eichi looked up toward the source of the sound. Sure enough, it was a Fearow.

Fearow, the Evolved Form of Pidgeotto and the final form of Pidgey.

The sheen of its wings was incredibly beautiful, and many Trainers raised it because they were drawn to the beauty of the feathers atop its head.

When it spread its beautiful wings, it could intimidate enemies, and it could also soar straight into the sky at a speed of Mach 2.

Eichi quickly found a place to hide, peeking out with only his eyes to observe the distant Fearow.

Just from the Fearow's imposing presence, he knew it was not something Eichi could afford to provoke.

Not far from that Fearow, a bird-shaped shadow flew over.

When it drew close enough to see clearly...

It was a Pidgeot!

Pidgeot and Fearow were bitter rivals. The Fearow clan and the Pidgeot clan often fought fiercely over territory.

Soon afterward, a flock of Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Fearow appeared.

Behind them came a flock of Spearow and Pidgeot.

All kinds of bird cries filled the sky.

The Pokémon within that area all began fleeing frantically.

Amid the chaos, Weedle jumped out of its Poké Ball on its own and tapped Eichi with its horn.

Eichi asked curiously, "What is it, Weedle?"

Weedle pointed in a certain direction with its horn, then crawled several steps that way.

Eichi understood.

"You want me to follow you?"

Weedle nodded. Then it ran in that direction, with Eichi close behind.

After several twists and turns, they arrived in a secluded patch of woodland beside a cliff.

Eichi observed the area carefully. It seemed to be a gathering place for Pokémon.

Eichi hid in the grass and cautiously approached. When he got closer, he saw...

A Pidgey, along with many Pokémon Eggs.

"Could this be where that flock of Fearow from earlier lives?"

He asked Weedle in a low voice, "Why did you bring me here?"

Weedle continued crawling forward until it reached a clump of vines.

Through the vines, Eichi saw many Berry trees ahead.

With a casual glance, he spotted several types of precious Berries.

Weedle wiggled its body as if showing off, and Eichi said happily, "Nice work!"

It seemed that all the Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Fearow had gone out.

Eichi felt that he was incredibly lucky today.

Only one Pidgey remained behind to guard the place.

To pick the Berries, he had to deal with that Pidgey.

Eichi sneaked closer to the Pidgey and hid not far away.

Lowering his head, he whispered to Weedle, "Wait for my command. When the time comes, use String Shot on Pidgey as fast as you can. Shoot out as much as possible."

Weedle nodded repeatedly.

"Alright."

"Get ready."

"Go!"

The moment he finished speaking, a mass of silk came pouring wildly out of Weedle's horn.

To make this work, Weedle was risking its life as a Bug.

The distant Pidgey seemed to sense something and had just started to react...

When it was bound by a mass of Bug silk.

"Yeah!"

"Nice work, Weedle!"

Weedle was delighted as well.

Eichi quickly took Weedle to pick Berries. They would pick as many as they could.

And Eichi felt that the Fearow would return very soon.

They needed to finish picking and get out of there fast.
