As he watched the scenery before them change, Lei Dong's brows suddenly froze, and even Xiao Yan's expression darkened to the extreme.
Under the dim yellow light, everything around them looked exceptionally dilapidated. The plaster on the walls had peeled away, exposing mottled bricks beneath. Traces of corrosion had settled into every inch of the space, and the air was thick with the musty smell of a place deprived of sunlight and ventilation for far too long.
Scattered chunks of rotten flesh and piles of white bones had been assembled throughout the great hall, arranged as decorations in every corner. Yet they did not appear disorderly; instead, they conveyed a meticulously arranged beauty so disgusting it was unbearable.
Beyond that, the hall contained one lifelike statue after another, men and women alike, posed in all manner of ways. Some clutched their throats in agony, their eyes bulging; some knelt on the ground as if begging for mercy; others slumped against pillars built from white bones, their gazes utterly broken. On every statue's face was the despair of having nowhere left to escape. Simply standing in this hall felt as if one had fallen into a vortex of despair, unable to break free.
Lei Dong was first startled by the suddenly revealed revolting scene and the statues in all their strange forms. Then, once he recovered, he silently breathed a sigh of relief.
"I thought they were people. You scared the hell out of me."
That was what Lei Dong said, and it was also what he truly thought. To be precise, he was not afraid of ghosts. What he feared were unexpected things suddenly jumping out in dark places. So even though these statues were not particularly frightening, their abrupt appearance had indeed startled him.
But at that moment, Zi
