| Alias(es) | Whitebeard (白胡子); “Pops” / “Dad” 496 509 |
| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Captain of the Whitebeard Pirates; former member of the Rocks Pirates 145 509 |
| Occupation/Role | One of the Four Emperors; known as the world’s strongest man 185 191 |
| Status | Deceased — died standing at Marineford after his final declaration to the world 540 |
Background
Whitebeard was among the strongest members of the Rocks Pirates. During that era, he ranked second only to Rocks D. Xebec in strength, ahead of Golden Lion, John, Ochoku, Ginrumble, Big Mom, and Kaido. He was six years older than Big Mom and Kaido and was already the crew’s strongest fighter aside from Rocks. 145
After the Rocks Pirates disbanded, Whitebeard became one of the Four Emperors. His protection extended to territories such as Fish-Man Island, where his presence kept slave catchers away. 191 499
Whitebeard’s defining ambition was family rather than status. He sought out promising pirates such as Ace with the intention of taking them in as sons, and he treated the Whitebeard Pirates as a family bound by loyalty rather than blood. 238 259 496
Appearance
Whitebeard was a towering, broad-shouldered man standing approximately 6.6 meters tall. His most recognizable feature was his upward-curving crescent white mustache. 184 337
- Massive, muscular build despite his advanced age and illness. 242 344
- Crescent-shaped white mustache, which Weevil notably resembles. 263
- Usually wielded the Supreme Grade Sword Murakumogiri. 147
- Had accumulated numerous old wounds, heart disease, and Devil Fruit-related physical strain before the Summit War. 242
- Ain’s Rewind-Rewind Fruit temporarily restored him to the physical condition of his 36-year-old self. 486
Personality
Whitebeard was imposing, proud, and fearless in battle, but he valued his sons above his own survival. He considered every member of his crew family, including those unrelated to him by blood. 496 539
He could be merciful toward old acquaintances and enemies, as shown when he initially urged Ginrumble to leave rather than continue fighting. 145 His compassion also extended to Weevil: after learning that Weevil was his biological son, Whitebeard accepted him despite his intellectual disability and condemned Bakingom Stussy for valuing inheritance and status over family. 268
Whitebeard possessed a sharp understanding of his sons’ strengths and flaws. Before dying, he chose Ace as his successor rather than Marco, believing Marco was capable of preserving what existed but less suited to leading the crew’s future expansion. 539
Abilities & Skills
Tremor-Tremor Fruit
Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit allowed him to create destructive vibrations through the air, sea, and ground. Its shockwaves could bypass weapon blocks and damage an opponent’s internal organs. The Fruit was regarded as the strongest Paramecia because of the scale and lethality Whitebeard achieved with it. 148
- Shattered the air with punches and sent Ginrumble flying despite his preparation. 145
- Generated vibrations powerful enough to crack space, rupture the earth, and churn the sea. 148 344
- Used Sky Quake to destroy Kizaru’s light clones and strike the real Kizaru through a wide-area vibration field. 344
- Tilted and split the sea around Marineford, altered tectonic plates, sank more than thirty Marine warships, and destroyed much of Marine Headquarters. 496
- Blocked a country-destroying light attack fired from Mary Geoise by unleashing Sky Quake across the sky. 536
- Could not safely distinguish allies from enemies when using his full-area Tremor-Tremor Fruit power. 534
Haki
Whitebeard possessed extraordinarily refined Haki, allowing him to contend with Emperor- and Admiral-level opponents even in old age.
- Clashed Conqueror’s Haki with Lin Qi through their weapons without their blades physically touching; the resulting shockwaves battered nearby crew members. 185
- Used Observation Haki to identify the real Kizaru among ten light duplicates while blinded by their radiance. 344
- Precisely shattered Aokiji’s airborne ice particles without harming allies, a feat attributed to exceptionally high-level Observation Haki and control. 500
Swordsmanship and Physical Combat
Whitebeard combined Murakumogiri with his Fruit power, overwhelming opponents through reach, physical force, and battlefield-scale attacks.
- Matched Big Mom in direct combat; Lin Qi judged that Whitebeard would likely prevail in a prolonged fight. 147
- Blocked Lin Qi’s powerful flying sword slash before counterattacking with a Tremor-Tremor Fruit punch. 148
- Escaped pursuit by Saint Saturn, two Knights of God, Saint Nashuro, and Kizaru before arriving on the battlefield. 336
- Used Geppo alongside his Tremor-Tremor Fruit power while confronting the attack from Mary Geoise. 536
- His old age, illness, and accumulated injuries visibly weakened him before Ain restored his body; the strain of his final Sky Quake left him unable to continue fighting. 242 344 486 537
Equipment
- Murakumogiri — Supreme Grade Sword; Whitebeard’s primary weapon and the focus for many of his Tremor-Tremor Fruit attacks. 147 536
- Whitebeard Pirates’ cloak — Worn during the Summit War; it fell from his body when he died standing. 540
Relationships
- Ace — Adopted son and chosen successor as captain of the Whitebeard Pirates. Whitebeard went to Marineford to save him and ordered him to lead the crew after his death. 490 509 539
- Marco — Son, ship’s doctor, and trusted commander. Whitebeard relied on Marco to understand his failing condition and later entrusted him with supporting Ace. 537 539
- Jozu — Son whom Whitebeard personally protected from Hawk Eyes’ flying slash at Marineford. 487
- Weevil — Biological son with Bakingom Stussy. Whitebeard accepted him as family and Weevil became fiercely devoted to protecting him. 268 487 488
- Bakingom Stussy / Bakinot — Former acquaintance from the Rocks era and Weevil’s mother. Whitebeard condemned her ambition and her decision to keep Weevil from him. 268
- Teach / Blackbeard — Former son and longtime crewmate who killed Thatch and betrayed the crew for ambition. Whitebeard sought to avenge Thatch and warned his sons not to pursue Teach after his death. 95 529 539
- Kaido and Big Mom — Former Rocks Pirates crewmates and decades-long rivals. Despite their conflicts, both respected Whitebeard and promised not to make things difficult for his sons. 145 539
- Golden Lion — Former Rocks Pirate and old rival who fought beside Whitebeard at Marineford. 499
- Rayleigh — Old friend and fellow veteran pirate. They shared memories of Roger and discussed Whitebeard’s wish to take Ace in as a son. 259
- Lin Qi — Initially clashed with Whitebeard as an Admiral, but they developed mutual respect. Lin Qi later brought Ain to restore Whitebeard’s youth and intervened to aid him at Marineford. 148 486 499
- Sengoku — Longtime Marine adversary who nevertheless admired Whitebeard’s courage and resolve. 499
Story Role / Major Arcs
Earth-Earth Fruit Conflict
Whitebeard confronted Ginrumble over the Earth-Earth Fruit, wounding his former Rocks crewmate with a Tremor-Tremor Fruit shockwave. Although he could have continued competing for the Fruit, he chose to abandon the contest and preserve his condition amid the growing conflict. 145 149
Recruitment of Ace and Acceptance of Weevil
Whitebeard became interested in Ace after hearing of the young pirate’s rapid rise and instructed Marco to investigate him. His interest was partly stirred by Ace sharing a name with Roger’s saber. 238 259
Later, Bakingom Stussy revealed that Weevil was Whitebeard’s biological son. Whitebeard accepted Weevil immediately, insisting that family mattered more than intelligence, status, or inheritance. 268
Conflict with the World Government
As Whitebeard’s health declined, the World Government increasingly treated him as vulnerable. Even so, he escaped a pursuit force that included Kizaru, Saint Saturn, and several Knights of God, then fought Kizaru directly. 242 336 344
Summit War
At Marineford, Lin Qi had Ain restore Whitebeard to his 36-year-old physical condition, returning him to peak strength. 486
Whitebeard defended Jozu, accepted Weevil’s protection, and continued leading the Whitebeard Pirates through the Marines’ encirclement. 487 488 When Squard was manipulated into attacking him, Whitebeard still mourned him as a son and publicly reaffirmed that every pirate under his banner was family. 495 496
Whitebeard’s fury devastated Marineford: he sank warships, killed a Giant Vice Admiral, split the sea, and reshaped the surrounding tectonic plates. 496 507 He later used Sky Quake to neutralize the destructive light attack from Mary Geoise, saving both his sons and the Marines, but the effort left his body critically damaged. 536 537
Death and Legacy
Steel Bone Kong delivered the fatal attack against the weakened Whitebeard. Whitebeard briefly regained consciousness to address his sons, appoint Ace as captain and ordering the crew not to seek revenge against Kong or Teach. 538 539
Before dying, Whitebeard used a Den Den Mushi broadcast to confirm the existence of One Piece, igniting worldwide turmoil and a new wave of piracy. He died standing with Murakumogiri in hand as Ain’s restoration effect wore off and his body rapidly returned to its aged condition. 539 540
After his death, Blackbeard seized most of Whitebeard’s territory. Years later, the Whitebeard Pirates were reported destroyed by Blackbeard’s forces, with Weevil the only known escapee while Ace, Marco, and the others were captured. 559 719
