Anton arrived at Professor Snape's office to find that Old Wizard Fiennes had been there for quite a while.
For some reason, Snape and Fiennes had become good friends—close enough to discuss and analyze some of Snape's experiences in Azkaban together.
He had gone there as a spy. For Snape to tell Fiennes about such matters, their relationship had to be exceptionally close.
Still, Old Wizard Fiennes truly deserved his reputation as a seasoned hand who had spent his life roaming the fringes of Wizarding society. He often hit the nail on the head, offering Snape advice from unusual angles.
More than once, the old wizard had offered his own suggestion: he hoped Snape would withdraw from this meaningless infiltration.
In his words—"No matter how much intelligence you bring Professor Dumbledore, it's useless. At most, it'll affect the battle between the Order of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters, but it won't affect the Dark Lord at all."
"He's a top-tier wizard himself. Even if every Death Eater dies, how would that affect him? With a wave of his hand, more people will rush to join him within days."
"Your target is the Dark Lord, not his forces, and not the outcome of the war between the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix. Understand?"
Then the old wizard had even laid out a clear plan for Snape.
Anton still remembered the old wizard's expression at the time.
The old man had held a glass of iced cola in one hand while pointing with the other at the Quidditch pitch outside the office's floor-to-ceiling window. Wisdom gleamed in his eyes as he motioned for Snape to look.
